Most common incisions for breast implant surgery

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Choosing the right surgeon is difficult, but one way to start your search is by looking for a surgeon who is experienced in the type of incision you are looking for.

The most common types of incisions are along the infra-mammary crease and the areola. With an areola incision, the implant can be placed on top of the muscle, partially below the muscle or entirely sub-muscular. It is the primary choice for a breast lift, and leads to the least scarring overall. However, one major downside is it could cause problems with breast-feeding.

Many women who are looking to have children after their implants choose the infra-mammary incision which doesn't pose the same risks for nursing. It's the most common type of incision as it has many of the same benefits as the areola incision without the added side effects, however scarring is more likely than with a nipple incision.

Almost all plastic surgeons are comfortable with these kinds of incisions, and as a patient, you should always ask your doctor which she feels is best for you.
