Joel L. Shanklin, MD, FACS, is Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and serves on several committees within the Society. He is the founder of Coastal Empire Plastic Surgery and was involved in the design and construction of the office and surgery center complex which opened in August 2003. Our surgery center has Medicare certification, Georgia Department of Community Health certification, and is the ONLY plastic surgery center in the region to achieve JCAHO certification.

Dr. Shanklin is a California trained plastic surgeon and studied plastic surgery to refine his techniques with plastic surgeons in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento. He was fellowship trained in plastic surgery at the University of California and also performed a fellowship in hand surgery and microsurgery at the Kleinert Institute following his general surgery training at the University of Arizona. He attended medical school at the University of Louisville and graduated in the top of his class winning several research awards and community outreach awards. He received his undergraduate degree cum laude from the University of Louisville.
